MACPO Training Academy

 

The first round of the MACPO Training Academy New Agent training was very successful. There were approximately 30 attendees per session.


Session 1: Probation 101
September 18th, 2008

Topics included: Delivery Systems, Professional Relationships, Ethics and Boundaries, Technology Systems, Chronos and Documentation, Data Privacy and Mandated Reporting. Presenters included: Steve Paquay, J. Hancuch, Christopher Maas and Terryl Arola.

Session 2: Probation 101
November 20th, 2008

Topics included: Interview Techniques/Collateral Contacts, Report Writing, Interstate Transfer, Drug/DNA Testing, Out of Home Placements and Sex Offender Registration. Presenters included: Abe Abrahamson, Amy Hertzog, John Schiro, Jeremie Reinhart and Debbie Lawrence.

Session 3: Safety
January 15th, 2009

Topics included: Interpersonal Communications and Field/Office Safety. The presenter was Tom Simerson-Walfred.

Session 4: Evidence-Based Practices
March 19th, 2009

Topics included: Introduction to Effective Case Management, Risk Assessment Tools (YLS/LSI), Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions and Motivational Interviewing. The presenters were Eric Johnson and John Klavins.

Session 5: Programs
April 16th, 2009

Topics included: An overview of Chemical Dependency Programming, Community Programs, Home Electronic Monitoring, Psychological Testing and Victim Services. Presenters included: John Marsolek, Tom Feddema, Abe Abrahamson, Karen Determan, Margaret Munson, Jackie Nichols and Brown County.

The tentative plan is to offer it again to new agents in 2011, with some revisions on the curriculum and locations.

The MACPO Legislative Committee assigned an "Option 60" sub-committee to look into an early retirement option for probation officers and corrections agents funded by increased employee contributions to PERA.

PERA conducted an actuarial study in 2008, and the findings were presented to MACPO on April 20th, 2009. Here are the results of the study in PDF format. Also, an informational newsletter was put together in October 2009, explaining the Early Retirement Option and how it works in PDF format.
